DNB in Rural Surgery

It has been estimated that 400 million people in India do not have access to basic surgical care. In order to help meet this need, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the National Board of Examinations started in 2007 a new postgraduate specialty: Rural Surgery.

Herbertpur Christian Hospital was privileged to be one of the first six centers chosen by the National Board of Examinations to conduct the training programme in Rural Surgery, offering a Diplomate of the National Board in Rural Surgery. Herbertpur Christian Hospital is the nodal center for this training and is working together with the Jiwan Jyothi Christian Hospital in Robertsganj (another EHA hospital in Uttar Pradesh), which is a peripheral training center for the residents.

Beginning February 2007, two residents are selected every year. These students undergo a 3-year training that includes rotations in General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT and Opthalmology and benefit from the wealth of clinical material and surgical opportunities available at these two hospitals. A curriculum has been developed that aims to equip them with basic surgical skills in these specialties as well as sufficient administrative skills, so as to enable doctors to set up and run surgical centers in rural and needy parts of the country, meeting a majority of the surgical needs of the community.

This course is specifically designed for doctors keen on serving in rural areas with an interest in surgical disciplines.

Herbertpur Christian Hospital has been succesfully conducting this DNB course since its inception , for the past three years , with our students developing excellent professional skills.
